CSA Continued . . .

So here are some photos of what was in the CSA Box:

This is a closeup of the zucchini, carrots, squash, beets, and kale

This closeup is meant to show you the different varieties of beets that were in the box

And this is a nice shot of the carrots Kale and the few squashes that were in mine.
Like I said before, every box has essentially the same things, but they all varied slightly.

My CSA

Well, it's not my CSA, but I organized one to deliver to us.

In the last several months, I have been looking for a CSA that would deliver in Long Beach, but no such luck. Everyone I found that was willing wanted to have at least 20 people to sign up, and every box started at the $25-$30 range.

I undertand why it would be that way, but, it just wasn't really feasible for me to do.

However, at the Earthday celebration this year in LA, I found a co-op of farmers that was just beginning a CSA. They are called the South Central Farmers. You may have heard about them in the news.

Here is a link to their Wiki-pedia article, which I think it pretty fair.

Basically, the farmers are inner-city dwellers, that had a large plot of land they had been using to grow veggies for thier families. Their produce, eventually became a source of income for the farmers as well. In 2004, the land was bought from under them and they were evicted, but they fought and ultimately the had to move. Now some of them farm on land that was donated by the city of LA, and others farm in Bakersfield.

After meeting with them in April, I contacted them to see if they participated in any of the Long Beach Farmers markets. (They don't, . . . yet!) But Iwas able to speak with Sarah about their CSA program. Turns out, they only needed to have 10 people to deliver and their box is only . . . . . .$15.

Needless to say, I was able to get 10 people, who supported this very quickly. This Sunday, May 25, was the first delivery. And WOW!!!!

This weeks box had two bunches of carrrots, zucchini, some chard (regular and Russian red), Kale, two types of beets and some other squash. All for $15.

Here is a few pics. More to follow . . .
